Mattresses are getting thicker and thicker, but mattresses deeper than 18" are more difficult to dress
with sheets and bedding. It is aways a good idea to check with the mattress salesperson to see if
the matttress you choose is a standard size (standard sizes currently mean a thickness of 12 to 15" for the most
variety in bed linens and 18" for a maximum thickness without having to go "custom").
Once you have your mattress, you need to measure the thickness so you can select sheets having the
best information. Choose sheets that have a pocket deep enough to accomodate your depth of mattress.
If you have a double-top mattress, then choose sheets that can at least pop into the bottom pillowtop (go
around the top pillowtop and mattress but do not go over the bottom pillowtop).
Also, look for sheets with elastic all the way aournd the fitted sheet since these will stay on better than
sheets with elastic only at the head and foot. If you twist and turn a lot and so find that
sheets pop off, we have two products to help the sheets stay tight.
If you mattress is thicker than 18" you may have to keep searching online for a store which makes custom
sheets. They can be found, so keep searching. Just don't forget to have that measurement to ensure you
are getting sheets perfect for your size mattress.
Armed with the measurements of your mattress (60x80x15" deep) and the drop to the
floor (either from the top of the bed or from the boxspring down) you can play math
student and start figuring! Many "oversized" comforters are now sized to accomodate
15" mattresses, although most duvet covers are not. Following are some measurements to
help you once you are armed with the measurements on your bed:
- Twin Mattress 39x75"
- 16" drop comforter= 71x91"
- 21" drop bedspread= 81x110"
- quilt/duvet size= 68x86"
- Full Mattress 54x75"
- 16" drop comforter= 86x91"
- 21" drop bedspread= 96x110"
- quilt duvet size= 86x86"
- Queen Mattress 60x80"
- 16" drop comforter= 92x96"
- 21" drop bedspread= 102x118"
- quilt duvet size= 86x86"
- King Mattress 78x80"
- 16" drop comforter= 110x96"
- 21" drop bedspread= 120x118"
- quilt duvet size= 101x86"
- California King Mattress 72x84"
- 16" drop comforter= 104x100"
- 21" drop bedspread=114x120"
- quilt duvet size= 101x86"
So, using the chart if you have a 15" mattress you can choose an oversized comforter. But if yours
is 18" you should probably choose a bedspread so you will have 3" extra drop to cover the mattress. Using
a bedspread you can decorate without the added cost of going "custom" since bedspreads are already larger.
With a bedspread you can still add on a bedskirt and together you can create your own custom look.
Duvets and quilts still are sized traditionally so you will get good coverage with a full/queen on a full
bed, but you may need a king on a queen bed to cover the mattress. Since there is no larger size then king,
you may want to consider using a comforter or bedspread and then the quilt or duvet folded at the end of the bed
as a decorative treatment.
Additionally, our special ensembles can be customized for minimal up-charge. We have many comforters and
bedspreads made specially for us and so we can request special sizes according to your specifications. Please
e-mail us if you need a swatch of one of our special ensembles or to find out about special sizes and
the costs involved (please include your bed size:length, width, depth and drop to the floor and the measurement
of the bedding you would prefer). Custom sizes are ordered specifically for you and cannot be returned.
Comforter Sets come with a standard 14" bedskirt. Most are split cornered for beds with posters or footboards.
There are several ways to work out the bedskirt dilemma. One way is to layer the bedskirts so that you purchase a
18" or 22" skirt which will fall to the floor (or within an inch or so) and layer the 14" skirt on top. Both skirts
will be on the boxspring and should coordinate in color. Choose the color you want to highlight as the bottom color
or choose a simple white or ecru hemstitch with a little elegant detail along the bottom.
In some cases you can purchase the comforter separately and then choose a solid bedskirt which is the correct length
from top of the boxspring to floor. Most Thomasville comforters can be ordered with an 18" bedskirt, please
e-mail us if you would like a price on a comforter set with an 18" bedskirt (include what size bed
you have). Additionally, items from our Special Ensembles collection can be ordered with longer bedskirts (up to 24"!).
Custom orders are specifically ordered for you and cannot be returned.
Sometimes customers order a custom mattress size to fit their sleeping style or bedroom. Linens Online stocks
popular sheets ready-made, so we have the standard sizes only. We stock sheets and mattress pads for
Twin (39x75), Full/Double (54x75"), Queen (60x80") and King/Eastern King/Dual King (78x80"). We also stock 2 special
sizes in both sheets and mattress pads, although not in every style. These 2 special sizes
are the Extra-Long Twin (39x80") and California King (72x84"). Please note that many college beds are extra-long twin
as are most hospital beds. Often times customers with king adjustable beds have 2 extra long
twin mattresses than can each be adjusted so you would need a fitted sheet and mattress pad for each extra-long twin.
Also of note, two Extra-Long Twin beds put together make a Dual King (78x80").
Unfortunately, if your mattress is an extra-long queen, three-quarter bed or another non-standard size, we do
not have sheets to properly fit your mattress. There are websites out there who make sheets even for round and heart-shaped
beds and they can help with non-standard sizes. Good luck!
Since the bedspread is seamed along the mattress line, the seam might be visible when you put a
queen bedspread on the king bed (since the seams will come 9" on the top of the bed on both sides as
a king bed is 18" wider than a queen). Although the seams are pattern matched, it may show on the
king bed where it seems invisible on the queen bed because it is on the edge of the bed. So, we do
have a 30 day return policy which would let you try it on your king bed and send it back un-used if
you notice the seam.
Another idea is for you to get the swatch from us and if you love it you can order a king comforter.
It would be 108x95. Or they could do a king bedspread with a shorter drop so it would be the
thickness of a bedspread and the drop of a comforter. Usually bedspreads drop 21" and comforters drop
15". So many choices! And that's why you might want to start with a fabric swatch...do some measuring and together
we can try to decorate your bed with the perfect solution!
